Lightning Blew Lead, Lose 4-3 OT

Dmitry Orlov scored at the 3:03 marker into overtime, as the Washington Capitals rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Friday Night.

Orlov, Jakub Vrana and Evgeny Kuznetsov each had a goal and an assist for Washington, which trailed 3-1 after two periods. Alex Ovechkin tied the game with his team-leading 17th goal 11:36 into the third.

The Capitals went 2 for 2 on the power play and closed out a three-game homestand with five points.

For the first two-plus periods, however, the Lightning appeared to have the game in hand. Mikhail Sergachev doubled the lead with technique not often seen from a defenseman.

Sergachev worked his way down to the net and was on the spot for a loose puck to easily deposit 4:28 into the second period.

Evgeny Kuznetsov replied for the Capitals 49 seconds later with a power-play goal of his own. But before the second period was over, Alex Killorn restored Tampa Bay’s two-goal edge.

Upon taking a pass from Point, Killorn rifled a top-corner wrister from the right faceoff dot to make it a 3-1 game.

Brayden Point scored his 100th career goal and had an assist for Tampa Bay. Nikita Kucherov recorded three assists for the second time this season, but also picked up a penalty that helped set up Ovechkin’s goal.

Lightning Captain Steven Stamkos returned in tonight’s game after missing the last few games, still listed as day-to-day tho he played tonight and was somewhat quiet.

Tampa Bay Lightning (12-8-2) 26 pts will be at home to face the Carolina Hurricanes (15-9-1), 31 pts tomorrow night 7:00 pm EST at Amalie Arena
