Bucs OLB Barrett wants to remain in Tampa

Buccaneers OLB Shaquil Barrett came into to the 2019 season as a free agent, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the one-year deal is worth $5 million dollars.

Barrett went undrafted from Colorado State in 2014 and signed with the Denver Broncos. He spent most of his first season on the practice squad before developing into an impact asset opposite Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller.

Barrett saw his role reduced in 2018 after the arrival of Bradley Chubb coming in via the Draft however, and he said in December he wanted a starting role in Denver or elsewhere moving forward.

“I want to start. I want to be a guy somewhere,” he told reporters. “I don’t want to just be a role player.”

Barrett searches for a place to be “the guy”  and with recent reports, Barrett seems to have found what he’s looking for with the excellent job he’s done with the Buccaneers in 2019.

Things have seem to be what Barrett was looking for as he’s set a lot of personal season best records and flourishing within DC Todd Bowles defense, with 14.5 sacks, 30 tackles and 6 forced fumbles.

Barrett seems to really enjoy being in Tampa Bay just as much as the Buccaneers seem want Barrett here, biggest thing is their is only 4 more games on his contract (playoffs are practically out of reach as of right now, but never know crazier things have happened).

As you will find below in this interview Barrett talks about this via. Buccaneers Twitter account.

Now I would assume this becomes a matter of if he would be willing to work with the Buccaneers on a friendly contract once the season concludes to ensure that he gets the right deal long term to help build this Buccaneers defense and make Tampa Bay area his home.

On our good friends podcast Mark Cook of PewterReport.com joined the PewterCast podcast this week and mentioned the spoiler on the lastest episode  below

“Shaq Barrett is the Buccaneers top offseason priority, he said off camera that he would take a hometown discount because he wants to stay in Tampa Bay, he and his family loves it here and I’m 99% sure that Shaq Barrett will be back in 2020.”
